Behind The Image

Blue Points

Tree Song

The foundational idea for my art is transition and inspiration. And enough reflection to cause transition and inspiration. Do I cause transition and inspiration by this piece of art?

As a visionary, I see differently. Many creatives have said the same thing, so I am in good company. Lol! How easily I comfort myself.  Actually I am writing here, attempting to recreate my original post. When I wrote The Why, what I had initially written as Behind The Image was gone. Forever. Originality cannot be recreated. From now on I will write in Word to save the thoughts then copy and paste. A better process.

That’s part of why I like creating in Photoshop. The non-destructive nature of actions taken. Even if the computer glitches for a minute, the work can be recovered.

How does this artisan explain how she sees? Blue Points and Tree Song had a somewhat similar transformational beginning. Blue Points began as a Dinnerplate dahlia in my garden. It was primarily pink and white with hints of red and yellows in its center. This magnificent dahlia was ten inches in diameter.

As a photographer one of my favorite techniques is Intentional Camera Movement, or ICM as it is commonly known. While taking a fall walk with my Canon, I came upon a massive oak that was moving with a breeze and it was singing to me. So I took a few ICM images.

Transformation of any image needs an inspired moment to set it in motion. I imagine myself as a mad scientist type….questioning each detail with wonderment. At the start of learning to create this way, I would mirror images. It took a bit of time to learn which images would mirror well and which ones wouldn’t. And the inquiry into the image, being a process, was like learning a new dance step. I would duplicate steps but with flow. An examination of the colors. A sense of the shape and how it speaks to me. A sense of the atmosphere. There is always a refining going on. Always a new solution to be found. I love when the unexpected happens; it’s akin to the joy I feel beside the ocean. Nature refurbished.

In this creative place the word reflective in my name became apparent. Reflections are fascinating to me whether they are in water, glass or in a mirror. From a mathematical perspective, reflection means to mirror a shape along a line.  Reflection is also the throwing back of an object in water or a mirror without absorbing the object. With these two players in my mind, images on my digital canvas are transformed into another subject. Depending on the source of the reflection and the light in the space, the reflected shape forms. My work combines technical structures of geometry, art and photography into one.

A word of caution to you, if you create your own website with blog posts, save your words. They are gold.
